Behind-The-Scenes: The SS12 Campaign Shoot

This has been the most eventful week here at Biko. The day before we launched the SS12 collection online (here), we went on set to Michael Alberstat's studio for an impromptu photoshoot for the campaign.

I had the most lovely and talented team, and I couldn't be more grateful for all their hard work that made this shoot happen. A very special thanks to creative director Karolina of The White Room, photographer Michael Alberstat, makeup and hair artist Anna Nenoiu and Ford model Mackenzie Loop. Also, thanks to my assistant Carly Blackman, as well as Michael's assistants!

It's crunch time to release the SS12 collection, and I awoke yesterday with the idea to take photos throughout the day to document the goings-on in the studio.

Oh Crazy Month of December...

The best way to put it is to say that it's been one very intense and productive holiday season. I've been going non-stop the whole time, and its been greatly rewarding and exhausting. I'll do my best to give the picture-book version of what I've seen and been up to.

It all began with the Toronto One of a Kind Show, which opened its doors on Nov. 24th and continued for 11 jam-packed days, until the 4th of December....

I was given a non-corner booth this time, which required extra thought on my part to
figure out how to allow shoppers in without making it feel claustrophobic.

Wolfie never disappoints.

Texture and shape. Makes me happy.

My friend Danielle Hession's beautiful work. I've commissioned her to create a custom
piece for me, and I cannot wait to meet up with her and get it going!

The day after the Toronto show ended on Dec 4th, I regrouped, repacked, and flew to Vancouver just in time for set-up at the Vancouver One of a Kind Show. Set-up took two days, and the show ran from the 8th-11th of December.

The Vancouver One of a Kind Show's entrance featured a huuuuuge chalk wall,
which visitors were invited to personalize.

Biko's set-up here was quite different from the Toronto show. I was given a 5x10 corner
booth, and I ordered a white hardwall as my backdrop. C'est chic, non?

Perhaps the white wall looks even better than the dark brown wall I'm used to...

I used several vintage boxes over black leather to display product.
Easily transportable and fun!

I was lucky enough to have the sales help of my friend (and talented photographer)
Marlis Funk. We had tons of fun pretending this corner of hanging necklaces was
a mini jail cell. Oh the silly photos we have from this impromptu shoot!

Holiday lights on my walk down Burrard St after the show one night.

After the shows were finally over, my friend Melanie (of Mena Dragonfly) and I treated
ourselves to a well deserved spa day. The following day I took a trip up to Whistler,
and even went skiing! (You don't understand, I hadn't been skiing in about 12 years!).
This shot is taken high above the mountain, while traveling from peak to peak
(Blackcomb to Whistler).

I'm finally back at my home base in Toronto, filling last-minute online orders and beginning to plan the next Biko collection. Yes, it never does end around here, but that's just fine. I'm thankful for a great jam-packed season, and I couldn't love doing this any more.

Altered Portraits: Art I Really Do Heart

I have a real love for curious art that takes something nostalgic and adds an unexpected twist. I also am drawn to creepy, dark and mysterious art, often with body parts floating or missing or toyed with in some way. I know this sounds strange to some, but I can't help being drawn in. Maybe one day I'll give a blog tour of the art that hangs in my home, so you'll get a better idea of what on earth I'm talking about.

I came across Brooklyn-based mixed media artist Mari Lowery's work on Etsy, and instantly fell in love. She makes the coolest original one-of-a-kind collages and prints inspired by her love of antique photos, animals, oddities, nature and halloween. I spent a long time going through her Etsy store, tempted to buy one or more of her pieces. I'm going to share several of my favourites here:

Gone Antiquing

A day with my girls is a day well spent. This past weekend we took advantage of the sunshine and drove past the burbs to hunt for curiosities at our favourite giant antique market. I ended up buying some awesome wooden boxes to be used as part of the Biko display for the OOAK shows, as well as some old Eastern Rowing Assiciation inscribed coins and a few pearl-handled mini pocket knives, which will be made into necklace pendants. Store Love: The Drake General

It's rare I'm in the Rosedale area of Toronto, but a visit to the dentist brought me near and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to pop into the local Drake Hotel General Store. One of three locations, this Drake General is super cute and quaint (well, they all are actually). Their Canadiana meets vintage meets industrial chic aesthetic is drop dead cool, and their love for Canadian designers and artists is even cooler. They even had a little flag display proudly celebrating their local suppliers, including Biko!

I'm bursting at the seams with excitement over the upcoming Biko Lookbook, to be released in just under two weeks. Every day I take another look at it, my socks get blown off all over again. It does help that I've got photographer Angela Lewis taking care of the photography and image post production, as well as creative director Karolina Loboda of The White Room taking the reins in managing the team, image editing and designing the final printed piece. I'm so lucky to have these amazing talents working on Biko with me. We've been dedicating much of this week to finalizing the images and layout, so soon, very soon you will see the final product. I'm going to be bad and give you a little peek... just one image, that's all. These ladies are just DARLING!

In addition, I must say the Biko shoot wouldn't have been possible without the collaboration of wardrobe stylist Jessica Albano, beauty artist Sandra Yang, videographer Daniel Graf, Biko interns Carly Blackman & Andrea Crofts, as well as the beauty and photography assistants. Thank you, my amazing team!

West Coast Getaway

Wowzers. I know it's summertime and that means we're allowed to take a well-deserved vacation, but I do whole-heartedly apologize for leaving you hanging for so long. I'm sure you haven't been waiting on the edge of your seat for my next post or anything, but still, it's been a long time and I'm sorry!

In this time away, I took off to San Francisco and drove down the Pacific Coast to Los Angeles and back. I must say, this trip was mostly for pleasure and not business, but of course I was very inspired along the way. While I was silly enough to leave my camera battery charger in Toronto, I did snap a few pictures with my trusty new iPhone. Here, see some of what I saw!

We're shooting the Biko Look Book this Wednesday and I've been neck-deep in sorting through ideas, inspiration, and product to feature. Our theme is 'Girls' Night Out' meets 'The Good Old Days' meets "Modern Nostalgia" (of course). I'm so fortunate to be working with such a talented team, and I cannot wait to give you the 'behind the scenes' scoop on those involved as well as the shoot itself later this week.

A 99th Birthday Celebration: Grandpa Edmund

On the day of my grandpa's 99th birthday this past May 1st, he got ready to boogie down. His children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends all came together to eat and be merry in celebration, but what we didn't expect was such a bangin' party! Grandpa visited the dance floor (of the amazingly 80s restaurant ballroom) on several occasions, showing off great moves we didn't even know he had and provoking us to let loose with him. At one point his cane became a prop which was being swung back and forth, à la the famous Mr. Peanut.

This photograph is one of my most favourite from that day. In his prime growing up in Poland, my grandpa was a great skiier. For his birthday gift, the grandchildren decided to enlarge, mount and frame his most prized personal portrait: himself as a handsome and vibrant young man holding his balance with two poles whilst kicking his skis high up in the air. Upon unwrapping the gift, he proceeded to reminisce of the wacky old days when these tricks were second nature, and then he jokingly began to hop up with his cane, pretending to do the trick once more. I still laugh thinking of this moment!

For Grandpa Edmund's 100th birthday, I hope to organize a gallery exhibition of the many photographs he has taken over his lifetime. My gramps began his lifeling career as a photographer in Poland in the 30s. Photography is still his passion to this day, and even at 99 years old, his camera is often found strapped around his neck.

I want an Abici Bicycle

...Yes I really do. I pretty much drool whenever I visit the Abici website, and I cannot wait for the day I have one of these babies to myself!

Abici bicycles are handmade in Italy, and are "simple and harmonious with... retro simplicity and hi-tech features... [making them] recognisable and pure".

As you may know by now, I'm a stickler for good branding/design, attention to detail and presentation. These bikes have it all. In addition to loving their logo, I really enjoy the evolution graphic found on the site's intro page.

My Abici model of choice is their Granturismo Donna, available in several gorgeous colours. I still can't decide on which colour to go with, but it's a toss-up between the purple, olive, light blue... um, I think I'm about to list every colour. I'll have to make up my mind upon seeing them all side-by-side in real life.

Location Hunting: Metropolis Living

Although rainy and dreary, today was a very productive day. I met with my graphics team (Karolina and Neil of The White Room) to brainstorm lookbook shoot ideas. We became so location-inspired that we took our meeting on the road over to the Junction to scout some industrial chic backdrops. While we decided that this was NOT what we will end up with (final photoshoot location is currently a well-kept secret), we couldn't help ourselves in the awesome new Metropolis Living store. I'm totally crazy about this new store, and will be paying a visit again very soon.

I also did some jewellery-making demos throughout the show, which went well but were pretty funny as I had to sit right in front of a larger-than-life poster of my face.... a little awkward nonetheless.

Behind The Scenes: The Making of the Booth

These past two days have been spent putting together the Biko booth at the Spring One of a Kind Show in Toronto. Here you'll see the set-up process in a series of photos, taken by my shady cell phone camera. Nonetheless, you'll get an idea of the blank white slate we're given, and the amount of props and details that are necessary to make our own little temporary boutique!

The Show opens tomorrow (Wed. Mar 30th) and runs until Sunday (Apr 3rd). Come visit Biko at BOOTH J-12! I'll also be doing jewellery-making demos in the centre aisle on Wednesday evening from 8 - 9pm, and on Saturday from 6 - 7pm.

It's official: We're up and running! Oh the happiness that everyday life will soon get back to normal... I didn't realize how much mental energy it would take to get this beautiful new beast going!

I have so much thanks to give to Karolina and Neil at The White Room, who went above and beyond to get the design and art direction just right. It's been a pleasure working with you guys, and I'm looking forward to our next phases: Lookbook, photoshoots, etc. etc. (The list didn't end at website!)

Back to the new website: We've got a full e-commerce site now, which I know is dangerous (as in tempting) for some, but it's the future already! Our Sex and the City Moment

We can't forget the opening credits of the show, where Carrie sees her ad on a passing bus. Well folks, Biko's time has come too! The lovely One of a Kind Show team chose a few designers/artisans and their work to highlight for their campaign this Spring 2011. They visited the Biko studio a couple of months back for a photoshoot of myself and my work process, and the results can be seen everywhere! On buses, streetcars, in magazines and newspapers. I'm very excited to be a part of this campaign, and the show (on from Mar 30 - Apr 3) is going to be great! Come visit me at booth J-12.

NYC: A Cell Phone Camera Photo Story - Part 2

So, NYC had its work cut out for me. After all, there is no such thing as all play and no work in that city.

I awoke to find the city blanketed with a layer of snow. It was so beautiful!

At the edge of Central Park, the trees looked especially pretty.

I visited many trade shows to get an idea of where Biko belongs in the NYC circuit.
This one, called Capsule, was pretty damn cool. I want in!

Holy digging! This is the most insane of my many suppliers...
rooms upon rooms of chaos in different forms. The boxes never end!

See that tiny walking path? You're lucky to even GET a path.
Most times you need to crawl OVER the boxes.
Ah, the beauty of working with vintage pieces!

NYC: A Cell Phone Camera Photo Story - Part 1

I spent last week in NYC getting tones of work done, and gaining much inspiration. Normally I take my huge Olympus camera everywhere with me, but toting it around while lugging supplies wasn't in the cards this time.. my trusty cell phone camera had to do!

Smallest plane. Ever. Most turbulent ride too.
However, my love affair with Porter Airlines began that day, perhaps partly
thanks to the large glass of wine they poured as soon as we were airborne.


Just what the doctor called for (at 11:30am), on an empty stomach, while fighting a hangover and fearing the shaky ride.

I was the luckiest girl alive. I scored a beautiful place to stay in through a
great friend, and I got to cat-sit this beautiful kitty named Kitty.

As soon as I dropped my bags, the sunshine begged me to go outside and take a long walk.
I love this old church on 5th Ave, surrounded by modern skyscrapers.

The dirt and grime in the subways adds tons of character.
Love the graphics and mosaics in all the stations, especially the station with floating hats!
The hats add a wardrobe accessory to each passenger when they stand in front of them
(and most of the time they don't even notice)!

Child piano savant being pimped out by his dad who's standing off to the side hustling CDs.
He was so amazing, most passers-by couldn't help but stop and stare.

See that crowd up at the front? That's the 2 hr lineup I skipped, due to dining solo.
One of my favourite things about solo travels is never having to wait in line at the shit-hot restos.
This restaurant is Momofuku. It is simply amazing.

The best bowl of ramen noodles ever. Thanks Momofuku.

After my dinner, I headed to Brooklyn to see my good friend Kym.
Such good times!

...And this was only the first two days! I didn't take THAT many more pictures, but I will save the crazy NYC supplier photos for tomorrow.... they are so insane they deserve their own post.

Paige of Bicyclette Boutique and I checked out the IDS Opening Night Party this past Thursday Jan. 27th. It was a fun night indeed! Little memories keep popping up, like a NOW Magazine photographer conducting an interview with us, in which we made up some silly and strange answers that didn't really make sense. (I don't blame him if he decides to skip publishing that story.)

Oh! And I met Christine from Bijou and Boheme, very randomly as we were leaving. You see, I met Christine online a couple of months ago through a Biko giveaway she hosted on her blog. At the party she approached me, asking if I was wearing a Biko necklace, and telling me "I know her." I was like, that's me! You know me? It was a flattering and funny moment, and then we realized we did in fact know each other, but only through the online world. What a reality check! This photograph by Richard Avedon sits right up at the top of my list of inspirational images. I get lost in the shapes created with body parts, the contrast between the greys and the starkness of her dress, and the textures in the elephants' skin. The elephants seem to be dancing with the woman, but their grounded feet are chained down. Although both happy and sad, it is a beautiful photograph.

Richard Avedon (May 15, 1923 – October 1, 2004) is said to be one of the most influential and well-known fashion photographers. The New York Times wrote: "...his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century."

This is true procrastination in the form of photography. I've been meaning to take some good pictures of the Biko studio to share for quite awhile now, but the time has never been right. Now's not the perfect opportunity either (I should really be working on the next Biko collection), but I'm taking a tiiiiiny little break over here. One day I'll even show you how nice the sunlight is in here during the day!

So, this is what I'm looking at right now:

I love this skylight on the upper right side. It faces east,
and brings in beautiful sunlight early in the day.

This is the workroom. I'm in LOVE with the magnet wall.. yes, the WHOLE wall is magnetized!
South facing large window, perfect for people-watching, boo-ya!

That mirror just opens up the space really nicely. Oh, and there I am!

I'm now attempting to dismantle last season's wholesale boards,
in order to prepare for the next season.

Once the body aches from a wild New Years Eve subside, I'm going to take 2011 by storm!

I'll remember how important a life/work balance is, and I won't overwork myself to the point of no return. Heck, I'll even start taking the time to daydream again. Oh yes I will.

Speaking of daydreaming, I've always wondered how many helium balloons it would take to lift me up, high above the city, like this little boy in French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short film The Red Balloon. I have yet to see this film, but it's on my list for 2011.

Oh how magical it would be...

OMG, so much to say. It's been very long and so much has happened over here! I'll start with posting a round-up of the Toronto One of a Kind Show, which ended on Dec 5th. Just a few final pictures of my booth, along with some other cool booths with great handmade products.

I saw these super cool wool 'taxidermy' animals by Felt Factory and just had to buy the unicorn (named Luna) to hang in my studio.

Biko is at the One of a Kind Show in Toronto, at booth # L-19 in the centre aisle. Friday was a super busy day, and the weekend should be total madness!

This show is also the unveiling of the new branding, which is seen throughout the jewellery tags, as well as the business cards and the backdrop flag signs. I love the crest and wordmark so much, and am excited to present the complete package, which includes the new website and e-store (soon soon soon).

A Zombie Halloween

POP-UP SHOP Madness

Today was a pop-up shop set-up party, which started off rough (with our rental car breaking down), but ended up being very productive. You see (I never did mention this before), my friend Paige's online store, Bicyclette, is being brought to the real world for only three weeks, beginning tomorrow! This store is seriously going to be super hot when it's complete, and so far, it's looking amazing.

Behind the Scenes: This is what fall days are made of

About a week ago, on yet another beautiful fall day, my interns (Mel and Brittany) and I went outside to enjoy the sunshine. Yes, we did get a lot of work done that day, so our long lunch was much deserved!

We ended up doing quite the photoshoot, which included throwing around bright leaves and taking advantage of the local statue of Johnny Lombardi. Many pictures were taken, but only the most tasteful ones made the blog cut. Stay tuned for the 'Street Style / Intern Interview" post, coming soon!

The Illustrations of Brittany Edwards

Brittany Edwards is an illustration Queen! I was first introduced to her drawings during our internship interview at Manic Coffee on College St, in Toronto. Upon speaking with Brittany and seeing these magnificent images, I couldn't say no to this girl; and so I hired her on as one of my interns. Brittany is currently in her 3rd year of Ryerson's Fashion Communications program. After graduation, she hopes to pursue illustration in the real world, most likely in the fashion industry. Birthday Bitch

This is my home. A week ago, my friends and I celebrated my birthday here with a late-night party that included a very yummy spread of food and of course, drinks. Want to know the inspiration behind throwing a party in the first place? This Birthday Bitch banner, that's what. Think about it, if you come across a campy, glittery, gold banner that utters these very playful words, throwing a party is pretty much the only thing you can do to commemorate finding such an awesome thing! So my friends arrived, they ate, they drank, they laughed, they brought me a delicious cake, and they payed homage to this awesome banner by using it as a backdrop for most of the night's photographs. A week later, it's definitely time to take the Birthday Bitch down, and I do so with a bit of sadness and with appreciation for all the memories it helped create that birthday.

Joe Fresh Pop-Up

Two nights ago Joe Fresh held a one-night-only pop up store/event in Toronto's Bloor/Yorkville neighbourhood. I arrived to a line-up of hundreds (if not thousands) of women, and was happy to see my girlfriends towards the front. We got in shortly after, and entered the white room of mayhem. White wine flowing, hors d'oeuvres being served, and racks upon racks of the latest runway looks made for super fun times. What I did not expect was to meet and chat with Joseph Mimran, the man behind the brand. He was personable, happy, talkative, charming, and full of compliments. We spoke of vintage clothing, nautical style, the event in general, runway looks, and Biko Jewellery. I shall not say more at this point in time, but it was a great conversation that not only made my evening, but reminded me that it pays to double dare yourself to go and talk to the seemingly unattainable silver fox who runs the show. What a great evening.

Rebranding Update & Bicyclette

Ok, I'm jittering with excitement as Biko's re-branding unfolds! Yes there is quite a ways to go before it's complete, but we're getting there. Here's a little preview of what's on the new Biko website: www.ilovebiko.com That's the new logo you see on there, and the new wordmark is still a secret to most of you. As I write this, the new business cards and tags are ready to run on the press, and I should see them by the end of the week! They are going to be so pretty, I can't wait!

On another note, I wanted to introduce you to Paige Boersma's blog and online shop, called Bicyclette. I've been following her blog for quite some time, and I'm a huge fan of the modern romantic aesthetic she presents so well. Bicyclette will be carrying Biko in the shop soon, and there will be a live Bicyclette & Biko studio sale sometime before Christmas. Yey to holiday parties and great finds!

Travels to Far Away Places

Whoa, I've been away a lot lately. My apologies for being MIA... a good blog is one that keeps you in the loop, and I've been doing just the opposite. I do have grand plans brewing, and so much to share with you. Sometimes I wish there were more than 24 hours in a day, then you would really get to see the madness in my head. Well, working with what we DO have, I think the only solution is to jump right in and tell you what's been going on.

Poland & Prague: I love Europe. I was gone for just over two weeks in June and July, and found so much inspiration in the littlest things: fresh air in the mountains, fields of flowers, contrasting eras of architecture (Renaissance vs. Gothic vs. Art Deco vs. Art Nouveau, etc), large public squares of gathered people (world cup fever), babushka dolls, funny money, cobblestone roads, creepy marionettes... oh the list goes on and on.

I also came across these awesome miniature helmets, which are replicas of the real deal, dating back to the 12th-16th centuries.

Note to self: Must find a way to make them a part of the Spring 2011 Collection.

Montreal: A 10 day getaway in July, including a cottage weekend in the Laurentians. Good company + delicious food + funny farm animals + sun + biking + heat = best time ever. I am super impressed with Montreal's dedicated bike paths that wind throughout the city, getting you where you need to be safely and faster than ever before. If a city with so many cold and snowy months can fix the bike vs. car dilemma, Toronto can too. Get it together Toronto!

Also, while in Montreal, I came across a beautiful new store named George and Jane, which I will do a feature on soon. They placed an order for Biko, which I think will go really well with their modern, clean, and edgy aesthetic.

Also in news: Biko is in the midst of a complete re-branding. This includes a new logo, business cards, labels, website (design and domain), catalogues, linesheet layouts, etc. This new look is slowly being perfected, and I cannot wait to show you! The completed project should be ready by the winter, but you'll see bits and pieces throughout the following months. Oh the excitement!

The Cliff House

I've become obsessed with the story of the Cliff House, the old photographs that document it and the people living during its prime. Throughout its incarnations, it featured art galleries, restaurants, parlors, lunch rooms, verandas, and eventually a hotel. It was originally built in 1863, but was destroyed in a fire in 1894. It was rebuilt in 1896 and burned to the ground (again) in 1907. A modest replacement was built in 1909.

I'm pleased to announce that Biko has been profiled in the first ever CRAVE Toronto book, which is 'a celebration of women entrepreneurs that showcases some of the most creative, interesting, and gutsy proprietors throughout our city."

Tonight was the launch party, and it was super inspiring to meet many of these amazing women featured in the book, who are following their dreams as well as running successful businesses.

That's me, proudly holding open the book to my page!

It was also great to have my amazing interns out for an evening of fun times. They work really hard and I'm so proud to have them on my side. And look, they rock Biko so damn well too! Brittany on the left is sporting the Ring Movement Necklace, and Mel on the right wears the Effie Bow Necklace. Thanks girls for everything!

Parla Italiano?

Alright, who here speaks Italian? In dissecting what I can, it seems the writer (of the Italian blog Frizzifrizzi.it || Your daily source for cool) suggests that Biko shares the name with the famous anti-apartheid South African martyr, Steven. I'm also getting that I have 'splendidly realized the mix of vintage and modern, in pieces such as the mini harmonica, the telescope, and the capsule necklace'. The second paragraph is is a tough one for me to decipher, except for the word 'party'. I also seem to be getting a nod to the UK site Not Just a Label, which carries the line, as well a direct link to Biko's catalogue and email. I know, I know, you're wondering where I learned to speak Italian, right? =)

EDIT: In using an online translator, this article became a lot clearer to me. The second paragraph was the most romantic of all: "Because you never know when you're at a party there is desire to get to play one piece from tavern (with legs that beat the ground), or watch the stars." Thanks Google Translator! The author was speaking of the real-life applications of the harmonica and the telescope!

New York Antiques Show: A Hunt For All Things Curious

Biko was in NYC last week, finding inspiration around every corner, and of course, conducting business. Braving the rain and g-force winds, I ventured out to the Pier Antiques Show, which was brimming with weird and awesome finds. There are too many pictures to post, but here are the highlights.

I'm in love with this UK-based website, and pleased to announce they now carry Biko. The NOT JUST A LABEL store offers avant-garde fashion from more than 2,000 designers around the world. Time to time, they call on celebrities and key industry figures to draw pieces from individual collections, spotlighting them. In addition to being a store, NJAL is also a fashion design directory and forum, bringing together the many facets of the industry.

Meet Effie. She's the new Biko mascot!
Well, she can't really be the mascot, as she's not real and has no head or face (or arms or legs), but she's the one girl that will have access to all of Biko's pieces, whether she likes it or not. Here, she's wearing the Tani Necklace, layered with the Scarf Wrap Necklace in gunmetal.
